http://www.evolved-software.com/treeit/treeit is an excellent piece of tree/branch creator that exports to .obj and .x. Similar to Tree[d] (Which seems abandoned long ago), but with a lot more options for customization.
That is a interesting tool to unwrap a mesh, mainly if you are going to use 3D paint tool. (my thought)
