I think it easier to subdiv your model and keep the square texture, than the other way around.
I am trying to keep the Poly count down as the detail on the model is just eye candy. The Sim that it will be used in ( Orbiter ) is more about the physics of the Mesh/Model then the looks.
Hopefully some of the points raised will help other users, sure helped me.
