The POVray plugin supports a lot of material options, but one thing it's missing is Media. Is there any chance of getting this supported in the future, or is the plugin basically dead?

I think that is possible, but not soon.
The original plugin writer (Chris - a.k.a Avariant) told me in the past (2009): "Unfortunately, I don't have any plans to maintain it.".
I just fixed some bugs found in this plugin, but I also like POV-Ray I would like to add some new features but with a RC version in development it would be a waste of time.
Just recently they have announced the final release of POV-Ray 3.7. (Changes and New Features Summary)
Maybe, during this year I'll try to play with the plugin again.

Whoa, POVray 3.7 was released? How long has it been now, almost 10 years?!
