Micheus, you have to connect the two vertices before Snap them; otherwise there will be two coincident vertices impossible to be connected.

Cleanup command wont produce any effect if before you dont connect the (1)/(2) vertices indicated at your pic (Cleanup works elimitating coincident vertices just IF they are connected each other):

"Ugly" faces are really a "hard" thing for newbies understand imo. Some basic situations i think about are in the following video.
A useful workflow (it doesnt solve every situations) is by performing the command Face|Tesselate|Quadrangulate.
Scale edge (and vert too) along an Axis to a Point (mmb Scale Axis) is way it is shown in video to solve more "complex" situations.
