(Holy Win Sword) How to make this? - c-sanchez - 03-20-2015

I 'm trying to do the sword of Vagran Stort "Holy Win ", but I find it a bit difficult, I have no idea how to do properly the protruding ends of this sword.

Thank you very much in advance for the help Biggrin

RE: How to make this? - Mishou - 03-20-2015

Hey Sanchez,

Is not easier to first make the sword alone, than model the cross shaped one and just combine them in order to have a single object?

RE: How to make this? - micheus - 03-20-2015

c-sanchez, just one idea (there are many ways to reach it)...

  1. The start point
  2. Select the top faces and use Extract to copy it
  3. Select the two vertices on the bottom face of the new object
  4. Connect [C] them
  5. In body [B] mode select the new object
  6. Use Rotate [RMB] to rotate it around the picked axis
  7. Confirm the command [RMB] after you find the desired rotation
  8. Scale Radial [MMB] the main object around the picked point and axis
  9. The result

  1. Select the vertice as shown and use Intersect [LMB]
  2. Pick the axis along vertice will be moved
  3. Pick the plane of intersection. Use the main object edge loop for that
  4. The result
  5. Now, the other vertice
  6. Getting the direction vector
  7. To get the plane parallel to the edge we need to select the edge and use the option "[1] Save edge normal" (right in the information line)
  8. After accept [RMB], that is the result

lets play with symmetries...
  1. Starting using Edge Loop in the midle of the main object followed by Loop Cut to remove the bottom faces
  2. We need to select the two vertices as shown and Connect [C] them
  3. Now selecting the vertical edge loop
  4. After use Loop Cut we remove the left half of the main object
  5. That is the result and we show the other object again
  6. Lets use Intersect again, selecting the vertice and vector as shown
  7. We hide the main object and pick the plane of intersection
  8. After accept [RMB], that is the result
  9. Then, we select both objects in body [B] mode and apply Weld

  1. For the start point we have a quarter of the desired object
  2. After selected the vertical face and use Mirror [LMB] we get the half of the object
  3. In order to mirror it vertically we need to make the two bottom faces one by selecting and Dissolve [Bksp] them
  4. With the bottom face selected we apply Mirror [LMB] again
  5. That is the result
  6. In order to continue to making the sword, we Loop Cut the bottom arrow

wow ! Vaqrant story fan ? One of my greatest games of all time ! Thanks for idea, I'll will try to model this too, hope suggestions above are clear for you Smile

RE: How to make this? - c-sanchez - 03-21-2015

Mishou is true, although this is more to practice with this part in particular Tongue

micheus it's just what I needed Biggrin
I must admit I do not understand this quickly, but is perfect the help Smile
At the moment I'm a little confused with the interceptions Tongue

Radi, Heh, I really like the style of this game, Now I hope to see the design of your model Smile

Thank you very much again guys!

RE: How to make this? - Radi - 03-21-2015

Hmmm I used another approach (as Micheus wrote, there many ways to do it), I started with n-gon (2d plane) and image background as reference. I dont need to modify it more, UV is ready too, only skinning this beauty later and voila! ^.^

btw, Vagrant Story rulez! ;p and FF12 - for me its Vagrant Story 2, heh Biggrin

I will post some screens again when done with texturing if you want, c-sanchez Smile

In Vertex mode the [LMB] option is the most useful option and also less confused. You just need to try some times to understand how it works - it's simple. You select the vertice/vertices you want to move in order to intersect a plane, then you need to define the direction in which that/those vertices will be moved and the last parameter is the plane of intersection. This plane doesn't need to be a face or something like that - that is why is why when Wings3D requires you to pick a plane you can select a vertex, an edge or face (or a set of then). A plane in this case is defined by the [plane] normal vector you see during the process.
It's more complicated to write than to execute the steps.

For Edge mode the [RMB] option is the most useful and similar to one above, except by the fact the edge already indicate the direction.

Sometimes is difficult to find good information about Wings3D's commands, but people forget about the puzzledpaul's tutorials. You can check this one: Vert / Edge Intersect, and then go back to Main Page - there are a lot of information on it.
For 3D stuff, even having a good documentation, anyone only learn if having practice. Wink

Radi sure! I would like see your model with texture!
I like how it looks Biggrin

I have not played beyond from FF8 Tongue

micheus As per usual, another link with good information Biggrin

RE: How to make this? - Radi - 03-23-2015

here it is Smile I like a result so far, like real Damascus sword, little shiny and corroded from wind/time ;p

Wow! I like much how it looks! Biggrin
yeah, even the colors looks cool.

you have talent Smile
