Selecting backfaces? - haroon - 12-15-2012 04:40 PM

Hi

How can I select back and front faces at the same time? I tried shift select rectangle but it does not seem to select back faces. Is there any way to do it (hopefully while in shaded mode)?

thanks

If you just use a standard sel window (rectangle), it should. Shift + sel window, for some reason, doesn't -- only those faces completely covered by the rectangle -- not even side faces. (But, then, I'm not an expert. Wait a bit and one will answer you better Smile )

Edit: You can use Control + Sel Win to deselect if there are many faces to deselect (just click on individual selected face to deselect, otherwise.)

Hi

Well without the shift it is not possible to do rectangle selection inside a model. You need to drag from an empty space without the shift which is not useful for many cases.

Marquee Select - Fonte Boa - 12-15-2012 07:45 PM

Wings Marquee Select methods are the following ones:

1. Beginning to draw the marquee with cursor outside geometry:

a. just draw the marquee:
select all elements marquee crosses, front and back ones;

b. hold Shift, draw the marquee:
select all elements inside marquee, just the front ones.

-----

2. Beginning to draw the marquee with cursor over geometry:

a. hold Shift and draw a marquee:
select all elements inside marquee, just the front ones

b. hold Shift, begin draw a marquee, release Shift, end marquee drawing:
select all element marquee crosses, front and back ones

Fonte Boa,

Thanks for the reply

#2 option b works for me. I use the Maya navigation.

That was really tricky Smile

Nice to know, haroon.

I didnt try the method i described above with all possible Camera modes (i am using 3ds max camera).

And, if Tweak mode is on, of course its combos can change this scheme.

2b works for me too, in Blender camera mode. Really helpful to know Smile

2a only selects front faces, regardless of whether view is shaded or wireframe, or if "show backfaces / show wireframe backfaces" is on.

<< 2a only selects front faces >>

You are right, maker: sorry for my mistake. Blush

ps: i'm editing my original thread to correct this: thnks!

----------------

So we can abbreviate the entire process:

1. Hold Shift and draw a marquee:
select just the front elements inside the marquee

2. Hold Shift, begin to draw a marquee, release Shift, end to draw the marquee:
select front and back elements the marquee crossed

We should say thanks! What I've been doing till now is rotate (and rotate) the view till I could see the back faces. Or use select all, then deselect unnecessary with CTRL+drag. Or select touching edges and convert to face selection. Or tear my hair out Confused

Also, thanks for all the wonderful tutors. Short and sweet. Even for a person like me who does not like video-tutors. Smile
