Making A Triangular Sail - mickeydsc - 05-14-2015

I've been trying to create a triangular sail, like a lateen or proa sails, basically a triangle but rounded to show it inflated by the wind.

I've had good success getting the outer shape by starting with a cone, flattening it in half on the z axis, but what I'm aiming for is having the inner curve exactly match the outer, so that the thickness of the sail is constant.

I've tried this approach ... https://youtu.be/se9bF_XiFXM ... but the sail wall thickness varies because it's a manual process to adjust the inner curve.

Is there better approach that will give me an exact and constant thickness of the sail wall? The reason is that when I import the resulting .dae file into Second Life the widest, curved edge of the sail (the edge farthest from the mast) is badly deformed, and from past experience on other imports, I believe this is due to the model not being exact.

Thanks!

You can use "intrude" on half of sphere
Like here

And here my way for make simple triangle sail, with begin from cube:

The fast way is to create a mold/shape (something you already did) and select the faces to be used and apply the Shell Extrude command - moving the mouse to set a small thick to your sail. When you finish the command a new object will be created and you can delete or hide the "mold".

As amfitrione already showed you that approach is waste of time since you can just use one command: Intrude. Wink

My apologies for taking so long to respond, but thank you for the advice. I used Shell extrude and it worked beautifully. Another tool in the toolbox for me to use on future builds!

Thank you for your reply, and my apologies for taking so long to respond. When I have a build that calls for a 'genoa' style sail like you've made with the cube, I will definitely try it your way!

Thanks again.
