If you achieve an 'impress' type boolean action on the object, however, you can have as a result a new kind of slicing at least. Because as far as I discern, the circles around the body do go to branches (there are circles even on the fingers of the figure) in a quite harmonious way.

Yes ... the new loops are very nice. And I think we have the selectors to recover them perhaps. I'm just saying ... the workflow was long and laborious and probably beyond what most folks want to get into.

As it turns out ... MeshLab has this geodesic function fairly well covered. So this was maybe an academic exercise. MeshLab is FAST.
