Bypassing collapse feature

When I try to imagine what it would mean to collapse all those edges, I invariably see something pathological happening. I wish you could just take a portion of the model and think about what collapse means and does ... and then by-hand do the transformation you wish by collapsing a few edges at a time to get your result.
