Hank, I know it has some time since you got this, but do you remember if you closed any window or changed any layout when it happened?
Anyway, I did a workaround that should avoid this unexpected crash and it will display some information in the log window to try to help us to discover the root of the problem (hopefully  ). [EDIT] The patch was removed since it was causing the Wing3D to hang on startup.
