completely new to 3D modeling - important question

Hello everyone I am completely new to 3D modeling. I want to use Wings to make sculpted prims for Second Life. Is this possible?

I have been told sculpted proms for SL can be made with any 3D modeling program, the only difference is how the file is saved when the object is completed, is this correct?
