I think that it's exactly what Glen Southern had in mind. I just watched a video tutorial about modeling a car using Modo and that is a quite good example of this issue. If you watch section 2 of this tutorial (which deals with creating a wheel) you will see how the modeller switches on and off all the time between the smoothed and normal view.
