What Camera Mode Do You Use?

What Camera Mode Do You Use?
I'd love to get a feed on what camera mode most users use.

The point here is that I'd like to propose getting rid of some (most) of the arbitrary and least use modes. And the point to this is to simplify feature creation, implementation and editability for the developers. Having to worry about 8 different camera modes and conflicting hot keys is simply a waste of time.

On the other hand, if this is really a non-issue for devs, then please disregard! Smile

I'll be entirely honest, I use Maya mode, as it is pretty much the standard / most popular camera manipulation mode in most DCC software, that I have used at least.

Me and my friend artist we always set it to Blender because we dont like the ON/OFF ways some of the others mode are using.
So you can add at least one more person on the Blender row in the results.

RE: What Camera Mode Do You Use?
Oh it would be sweet to force everyone into using the Wings camera mode Wink

There are so many interface obstacles when writing a 3d modeler, adding extra complexity to the task can become a major burden. 3d modeling interfaces are overloaded to begin with nevermind add optional interface controls.

Sometimes I wonder what will happen if touch screen interfaces become the standard; making a fully functional 3d modeling system without a keyboard and mouse would be challenging. Probably could only support one camera system then.

RE: What Camera Mode Do You Use?
I love Wings camera mode because it only requires one hand. I think it is the perfect method but it is all about what a person gets used to I guess.

As long as the coders are ok with having all the different modes available, I think it is good to keep all of them. If a persons primary modeler is Blender then that person will want Blender mode. If a persons primary modeler is Maya that person will want Maya mode. etc. etc. etc. Having all modes available makes it easier for new users to add Wings3D to their tool set.

Not many people have voted... It would be interesting to see how the vote turns out when all forum members have voted.

I am actually quite surprised that 'so many' people use the Wings camera mode. Smile

To further this thread a bit, while I understand that 12 votes is not near enough to get any real basis, I truly believe that we could probably get rid of the Nendo and Mirai camera modes, simply for the fact that the two programs are basically extinct at this point.

Thoughts?

It is very curious: the only difference between Nendo and Mirai camera modes is the way to dolly (mmb in one, rmb in the other one).
How the Wings3D camera user perform dolly? I can see any instructions about in information line? Or do they dolly just by scrolling mouse wheel (what isnt a much accurate way)?

Anyway i think those two modes should be kept: if there are users that adapted to them and are working this way (even if they didnt vote here), why to eliminate these modes? The "universe" of this poll is very limitaded and may be not representative of the real wings users...

(i put my vote there: i use 3dsmax mode)

RE: What Camera Mode Do You Use?
While I defintely understand where you are coming from, especially considering that there are only 13 votes on that poll, my belief stemmed less from the absence of votes and more from the absence of the actual software that the modes were based around.

I don't know of any other software that has adopted said modes (which does not mean they don't exist), and with that in mind, it is a fair assumption that most users are also using some other package, whether it be Max, Blender, Maya, Sketchup, etc. Which, in turn, means that it is ALSO another fair assumption that most users do not use the Nendo or Mirai camera modes.

This comes down to the same issue with the Basic menus VS Advanced menus. Why double the developers workload for functionality that isn't, and arguably shouldn't, be used.

I'd argue that getting used to the Nendo or Mirai camera mode is actually counterproductive to a users needs, seeing as those skills, those muscle memories will not translate over to anything else. And as we all know, muscle memory is a large part of a users speed and efficiency.

As I mentioned initially, if devving for these other modes is really a non-issue, then no big deal really, but if it is actively removing time from the devs, then I really think consideration should be given to this.

And from optigons earlier response, it feels like less would definitely be a boon. Unless I misinterpreted his post?

RE: What Camera Mode Do You Use?
Although Nendo and Mirai are extinct, if one is using a two button mouse or a laptop without scroll wheel button Nendo works quite well. At least that is what I used when I didn't have a mouse with scroll wheel MMB.

Hold down the Alt key while zooming for a smaller zoom (dolly) factor and more accurate way. You can adjust the setting for this under preferences.

@oort

Ah! I had no clue. Smile A bit off topic but, perhaps we could rename the Nendo mode to '2 button Mouse' mode or something.

So many factors to consider. lol.
