A newer erlang (i.e. 17.0) is required for 1.5.3 and current master.
If you are going to build it yourself, do your self a favor and get all the erlang sources from github. Setup a dir ~/src get (and build) esdl wings cl and set ERL_LIBS=~/src is the easiest way.
