| One Way to Create a Wine
Glass
Start with a sphere.
Change to Edge selection mode (by pressing the "E" key) and
select a horisontal edge as in the left picture below.
Use Select Edge
Loop, or simply press the "L" key, to extend the selection
to a loop around the sphere as in the right picture.
Use the Loop Cut command to divide the sphere in
two objects along the selected edges.
The Loop Cut command automatically changes to Body
selection mode and arbitrarily selects one of the new objects.
In this case, as is shown in the left picture below, the upper
object was selected. (If the wrong object had been selected,
you could have used the Select Inverse command, which can be invoked by pressing
Ctrl-Shift-I.)
Move down the selected upper object using Move Y.
With the smaller half-sphere still selected, reduce its height
somewhat using Scale Y.
Clear the selection (Select Deselect or simply press the space bar). Change
to Vertex selection mode. Select the two vertices shown in
the left picture, and apply the Collapse command.
The result is shown in the right picture. The vertices have
been replaced with faces. The selection mode was automatically
changed to Face, and the new faces are selected.
Without changing the selection, use Scale Uniform to shrink the faces to a size suitable
for creating the stem.
But before creating the stem, it's better to first carve
out the cup (to avoid making the stem and base hollow as well).
Press the space bar to clear the selection. Select the upper
face of the cup.
Choose the Intrude command. You can interactively
vary the thickness of the walls of the cup. In this case,
you probably don't want to make the walls any thicker, so
left-click to complete the "intrusion".
Clear the selection (press the space bar). Change to Edge
selection mode and select a loop of edges (first select one
edge, then press "L"). Move the edges slightly inwards using
Move Normal.
To finish the cup, first change to Face selection mode, then
select the lower face of the cup and the upper face of the
base. Apply the Bridge command to join the faces.
The wine glass is ready. Pressing TAB to see a shaded preview
of the rendered apperance.
Import the wine glass into your favorite renderer application
and assign a glass material.
