I'm at my PC now and doing some tests and - comparing with the screenshot you posted before - I noticed your problem isn't related to the preference path issue. Look at this image where W3D was loaded for the first time (without preference.txt existing):

now, comparing with your screenshot we can notice that after try the OpenGL modes the Actual is absent. So, it seems we have an OpenGL initialization fault.

Now, knowing your system uses a Mobile Intel Graphics (Intel is mentioned here many times related to OpenGL problems), I would suggestion to check if there is any video card driver for update.

I found an exact same issue like your in this thread (without information if it was fixed) and this other post (where the problem was caused by the skin on the Windows OS).
