Ambient Occlusion Setup time...

Anyone else have reall problems on 100K or 200K models
when trying Ambient Occ from tools menu ?

I wonder if Scorp ever tried to optimize this ? I have no idea.
But it is extremely slow for 50K, 100K, 200K.

Like maybe system lockup slow.

tested on my ~156k faced tank
the Ambient Occlusion took for me like 5-6 minutes

and I never bothered using the AO since it looks quite weird/funny
so dunno if I might made some error on my side which causes such odd result

my specs if it should give any sort of relevance
Nvidia 9800 GTX+
4GB DDR2 ram
Intel Dou CPU E8400 @ 3 GHz
Windows 7 64 bit

OK. That sounds about right to me.

I think some of my setup times have been longer ... well ... they have because
I have aborted them after long time.

I should probably supply a link to model with some test results. I'll get back to this later.

It looks pretty cool on some models. Models with large flat facets like yours ... not so great way to
shade. Foamy tidbits ... really cool.

Well a possible workaround for relative flat faces that it get's smoothed over several times over or with your 'Divide Rigidly' function applied on it so it should give a more smoother AO

through it wouldn't really work much seeming as this AO function calculates via geometry casted fake 'shadow's or so I guess, perhaps as well some light added on it might manipulate the AO behavior a bit but I dint tested it yet so far

In this case it seems to be more suitable for environment styled models or models with alot of small stuff added on it

You can do AO with YafaRay/TheBounty If you are just doing it to get neat images of your models.

Actually ... I'd be doing it to get neat videos of my model. HyperCam capture of model
manipulations in Wings3D (just navigating around AO lighted modeel).

Oort ... I have Maxwell. Spoiled. Probably won't ever even goof with Renderman , Aqsis or 3Delight again.

ggaliens,
How much did you pay for Maxwell? I see it listed for $995 on their website. You must have too much money... Biggrin

ggaliens, here is the "technical" explanation about the Wings3D AO: Wings3D OpenGL Ambient-Occlusion Generator

and yes, as many vertices your object has better will be the result.

Learning edition is not bad at all ... and for like $133 or $160 on sale. It was purchased for me .. but I did the research on which version to get and features and price.

Get Daz Studio while it's still Free! ... Took a bit to figure out the Renderer ... But it's Way Cool! Uber Surface and Uber Area Lights adds a Gorgeous AO, and you can render to Texture! Yeah I know you guys are all about the Open Source stuff, I don't see a problem with Combinations!! ... Also, you may wanna play with Guerilla Render
