Hi!

While I won't deny the fact that this approach looks better, personally I would go with a normal map.

You always can ask. If someone has an answer will try to help you. Wink

You are right. It can be much easier and the solution used for much of these cases. It was what I used to the Cemetery:

I think if it will be used for 3D print, then the changes need to be done to the geometry (mesh). Except if the newest 3D printers are able to process the textures.

Thank you for positive answer. I need to write this concave text with depth of 0.3 mm and this depth should have angle from up to down 10-15 percent. Also when this text is ready I should write it on the end of tube. Tubes outside diameter 8mm, inside diameter 5.5 mm, that means the thichness of tube is 2.5 mm. It goes without saying that text should be curved like tubes form and should fit on the end of tube. Thank you in advance.

@Micheus Yes, for now, at least, 3d printers can work only with the geometry provided. However you can modify the mesh to add detail from a normal map in 3ds max, probably it is possible with other 3d packages.

Stimorol ... is there something that stops you from doing it to the geometry ? What is the current "SHOW STOPPER" ?

Sorry but I didn't understand what did you mean? It will be great if you could help me with this geometry.

Stimorol, the idea is always the same.

Just notice Wings3d doesn't works with mm, cm, m, ... It uses its own unit system (WU). So, you can build your model using it as the metric system you want and export and import in the other app and scale the mode to fit in the proper metric system.

For 3d printing, someone has tested and each 1WU = 1mm. In this case you still can work using the 1WU as 1cm, but you will need to scale it ten times (1000%) before export to STL file and print your 3d model.

That said, here is another video using some references you wrote above:

Just be careful of the RING that all the faces are super FLAT. I think because of way it is made ... that is true. But a quad face in a mesh is very often a little bit bent. Bent faces may BREAK the booleans code.

Thank you for nice video. also could you tell me more about selections you are doing in video ? I mean selecting lines on tube when starting.

I added some annotation to the video pointing which shortcut I used.
They are the same command I used in the first video.

Selection operations like Edge Loop [L] and Edge Ring [G] are the most used. Cut edges by an small amount of segments is also on your fingertips (1,2,...,9) as well as Connect [C].

Take a look at the full list of default shortcuts on main menu Help option. Wink
