Under Edit > Preferences > General > Highlighting > Enable "Conditional deselection". This way a single space bar will deselect but keep the same mode (edge or face or edge). Double space bar will give you what you have now. This should reduce the frustration level once you train your brain to the new method....
Maybe the Wings3D default setting should be turned on instead of off since many users have this question/issue???
