Greetings,

I am planning to try wings3d in my (little) spare time next month.

My use case is to model small objects I can then produce with wood.

Why Wings3d? Because I love Erlang

I am running wings on Debian.

My question is, where to start learning?

The obvious answer is: https://www.wings3d.com/documentation/us...-contents/

Just wanted to be sure that's the right place and there's no better places to start.

Cheers!
I got the general idea and was trying to make it's "hands" look round and removed a couple of edges, which did make it look much better in Wings3D, but when I exported it as an .obj file it didn't work as intended.
I tried googling the problem, and using AI to find a fix but I'm not even sure how exactly could I describe my issue.

hi all,

I uses to build my projects using Wings 3D...
But its use is too intuitive to fit and simply draw mechanicals parts with the right quotes.

I had to import all sharp from a dedicated CAD program in AI format. (DXF is not implemented)
For example, an object can be scaled on X axe and the "TAB" key can expend it to a percent value.

Suggestion: ("Scale axis" popup object menu)
In the "TAB" menu, is it possible to fix the target quote to a "mm" value, in addition to the percent value.

Put a "percent" and a "mm" check box in the "TAB" window to fix an object to a precise overall dimension.

Actually, i had to create many overall dimension cubes to fit my object to the right dimension.

The vertex length can help to get dimensions, but you had to do another cube to check it.

It drives me nuts.
It will easy to scale a box on an axe and type TAB "150mm" to get a box with the 150mm length dimension.
Not ask the unknown "%" value !

We can take two points and expend it to a target point, but you had to create another box to fix the length in "mm".

I like Wings 3D.
It's an excellent free software, and there is a lot of programming work.
It's perfect as is, it's just a little suggestion.

Many thanks to the Wings team for the time you gave us all.

Hi! I'm trying Wings for level design/grey boxing at the moment (really enjoying it so far). I want to make lots of little houses. While their geometry can be pretty simple overall I'd like to get some accurate roof overhangs -- no problem with very simple houses but a little harder to do for L-shaped ones.

My current workflow is to
-make the simple house form with gable

- (shell)extrude the roof along normals - here is where it gets wonky because of the normals, see picture

- normally I would now just extrude the small sides of the roof all at once to get the overhang but the result turns out crooked because of the uneven first extrusion...
So instead I use an intersect with a temporary plane along each sloping edge of the roof, one by one.

End result:

The workflow is not so terrible and the end result is good. But it is just a little tedious to repeat. Is there a better, faster way to achieve it? I'm quite new to Wings so there might be something simple that I'm missing.
Thank you!

I have run into a bit of a slump here, apologies if it is an obvious solution, I just couldn't figure it out on my own.

I followed some tutorials and exported the texture after mapping it, however I must have screwed something up. I messed around with the default material and I guess it overran the UV map I had made? However, opening the UV window with the object selected takes me to the correct map as I made it but I can't get it to show up on the object, it just stays with the edited default material.

A possible solution I found is to select the object, right click on UV map to redo it and trace over the old one which shows up in the window, which wouldn't be unreasonably hard, but I'd rather find a more elegant solution in case I have the same issue later on but in a more complicated fashion.

I'd like to know, is there any other way or do I have to bite the bullet? Also, when I made the UV map I clicked on "Export UV" and got a .eps file. Is it not possible to import this file so it redoes the UV map exactly as it was before?

In the image I attached, the outlined file in the outliner is the texture I am trying to apply.

Thanks in advance.

I have 2 screens and sometimes I like to record tutorials.
So I moved my Windows main screen to screen 2 to get my Start bar out of my videos.
Loaded up Wings, right-clicked to create a cube, and the context menu comes up on the main screen, not in the middle of the Wings window like it has for 500,000 years.

So, if a have, say a 1000 obj files, would it be possible to use Wings3D to make screenshots of the models (wireframe edges + faces) using the command line?

So launch Wings3D, set up the camera pos, coi, fov, (maybe edge colour) and have it import an OBJ and make an image?

I am looking to just replicate the editor view, but automate it from the command line.

Thanks.

I'm not sure whether this counts as a bug or not, maybe there's a setting I'm unaware of, but here's what I ran into:

In the latest versions of Wings3D, I can no longer dock the UV-editor window into the main screen, it stays afloat and refuses to dock when I move the window around.

Here's what I know:

I use the Windows 64x version

It functions as normal in releases up to 2.2.6.1

The issue appears in 2.2.7 onwards

Only the UV-editor window refuses to dock, all other windows work normally
