It's not really a matter of simple tools versus advanced tools (a dope sheet is not an airplane cockpit by far). It's a matter of making tools available for a person to build a workflow upon. A "keyframer" is not much of a workflow enabler.
To use a familiar analogy, it's like comparing working with 3D models in a text editor and in Wings. Wings is the clear winner even if you only ever use a couple of commands from it. Because they are the right commands.
