Area lights that are single faces work just fine, but ones that are objects crash the plugin.

That's a known bug (and fixed). What version of Wings3d have you installed? I noticed that for some reason it is back in the 64bit version.
Anyway, the Search link could have helped you about that: POV-Ray [plugin] (updated: 2013/Jan/08 )
Please, read the instructions there.

Hmm, now I'm having another problem with area lights. If I create an object and convert it to an area light, it seems to behave both as a regular object, and as an area light simultaneously. Like, it is visible as a normal object (albeit without any texturing, but with shading from other lights), but it also emits light. I'd expect for it to be either glowing due to it emitting light, or for it to be completely invisible!

edit: and for some reason, setting its opacity to zero doesn't actually make it disappear!

That is something you can see commented in this post.
You also would check the file attached after this other post but don't forget to read the next post that explain why it worked.
We have talked a lot about how to make Area Light work better for POV-Ray 3.6 - the version 3.7beta (now is the stable 3.7) have some improvements that were not used. If you want, you need tweak the exported .pov file (I use do that).

The thread I pointed in my first answer for you is not closed. There are some questions without answer yet. If you want check the thread and make some comment that can help us to make this plugin better you are well come. Smile
